An 80% Grade A in Art & Design IGCSE for June 2023 - a result that transformed an inquiry!

Dear everyone,

I'd like to showcase some of my student's work from June 2023 with all of you. I have received her permission to share it, and I want to thank Jidan for allowing this!

I must admit, I was quite perplexed by the assessment our students received, especially for Component 1, when graded by CAIE. I was shocked they assigned her work a 'D' grade, which I found utterly absurd!

(Before appeal)

Component 1 : D

Component 2 : A

Overall 71% B

Please take a look at her Component 1 coursework. You'll agree that this work should not have been labelled a 'D.' Due to this lower mark in Component 1, her overall grade was a 'B' at 71%.

What's particularly baffling is that while Component 1 received a 'D,' Component 2 was graded as an 'A'! This stark contrast left me feeling frustrated, disappointed, and questioning the logic behind CAIE's marking and how it aligns with the rubric criteria in the syllabus. I know I'm not alone in these concerns.

On a positive note, I'm thankful that the student's parent decided to appeal Component 1. Based on my previous experiences, appeals rarely resulted in any changes. We anxiously awaited the outcome of Jidan's Component 1 appeal process, and FINALLY, CAIE revised her Component 1 grade from 'D' to 'A'! It's safe to say that she did not deserve a 'D,' and we all knew it.

With this revision, her overall results improved from a 'B' at 71% to an 'A' at 80%! We couldn't be happier with her achievement.

I genuinely hope that CAIE and the IGCSE Art & Design Department take a closer look at their evaluation processes for students' work. Over my 13 years of teaching and guiding IGCSE 0400, I've observed a growing, unnecessary stringency in grading. The lack of consistency in marking from one year to the next has made this subject one of the most challenging among all IGCSE subjects.

While I've been passionate about teaching this subject for over a decade, the recent inconsistent results have left me questioning my competence in a way that I shouldn't.

Jidan's work can serve as an additional reference point for all of you.

WELL DONE JIDAN!
